R66 NxG Palo Verde

The simple, lightweight system provides air-conditioned comfort and reduced humidity throughout the five-seat cabin. An overhead console provides vents for each seat with 250 CFM total airflow. The 42 lb air conditioner uses the latest automotive refrigerant and has 17,000 BTU/hr cooling capacity. The system is controlled by a toggle switch with low and high fan settings and uses approximately three horsepower during operation. The evaporator and fan are mounted under the aft center seat, preserving all four under-seat baggage compartments. The compressor engages when the fan is switched on and automatically disengages during autorotation entry to maximize glide performance.

The 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) video camera records video, intercom audio, radio communications, and GPS position to a removable 128 GB USB flash drive. Recording starts automatically when the helicopter is turned on and stops when it is turned off.  Recording video and/or audio to the flash drive can be independently controlled with separate switches.

Two, a small and a large, optional auxiliary fuel tanks are available for the R66 Turbine helicopter. The small tank, dubbed the Slimline, holds 23.2 gallons (88 liters), and adds approximately 1 hour to helicopter endurance and extends its range by as much as 100 nautical miles (115 statute miles). It mounts on a fiberglass tray that installs in the aircraft’s baggage compartment, occupies one-third of the space, and leaves room for up to 200 lbs. of baggage. Both tank and tray can be removed when not in use. The tank weighs 29 lbs. when empty and 189 lbs. when full of fuel.

The 43.5-gallon large aux tank extends the helicopter’s range by approximately 2 hours or as much as 200 nautical miles (230 statute miles). The fuel tank mounts on a fiberglass tray that installs in the forward section of the baggage compartment. The tank occupies two-thirds of the compartment, leaving space for up to 100 lb of cargo. Both the tray and tank can be removed when not needed. The system weighs approximately 37 lb.

Both tanks include crash-resistant fuel bladders that fit in an aluminum and fiberglass enclosure with an internal fuel pump that transfers fuel to the helicopter’s main tank at approximately 40 gallons per hour. Aux Tank Controls are conveniently located in the u­­­pper instrument console and feature an ON/OFF switch, a NO FLOW annunciator light, and a FUEL QUANTITY button.

TB17 by True Blue Power, a division of Mid-Continent Instrument, offers substantial weight savings, improved starter performance and longer life.

The TB17 battery weighs 16 lb, which is significantly lighter than the R66’s standard battery (52 lb). Lithium-ion chemistry holds a higher charge voltage and provides a more constant discharge rate than lead-acid delivering consistent, more reliable turbine starts. The battery’s internal heater enhances functionality in cold temperatures as low as -40°C. Typical battery life is 8 years with minimal required maintenance (visual inspection and capacity check) every 2 years.

The TB17 battery passed rigorous manufacturer and FAA tests to ensure safety. A cockpit indicator warns the pilot if a battery fault is detected. During fault conditions, the battery automatically takes itself off-line. Built-in circuitry prevents overcharge and/or overheating, and the TB17’s advanced Nanophosphate® chemistry is much less susceptible to thermal runaway than many other Lithium-ion batteries.

The fuel flow meter provides real-time fuel flow data to the GTN which in turn displays the fuel consumption rate along with fuel range rings on a moving map. Fuel used, fuel remaining, fuel to destination, and other real- time information is also available on accessory pages.

The optional IBF provides added protection for engines operating in dusty environments. The IBF mounts to the same inlet screen as a standard filter, uses the same filter bypass systems and cockpit indications as a standard filter, and imposes no performance penalties making its installation transparent to the pilot. Service intervals for the IBF are 300 hours or annually, and the installation includes a pre-flight sight gauge to provide an early indication that the filter is becoming dirty.

The optional Rear Center Console replaces the center rear seat and provides secure storage for travel essentials. The center seat can be re-installed when needed.

The Heated Pitot Tube replaces the standard pitot tube and is used in cold environments when conditions conducive to pitot ice exist.

Extra Corrosion Protect is an additional sealant that is applied to help protect against corrosion in marine environments.

A white forward strobe helps increase visibility to other pilots and wildlife during nighttime and daytime operations.

The 406 AF-Compact ELT provides a direct connection to global Search and Rescue (SAR) services when an emergency situation occurs. The 406 Compact will automatically activate in the event of a crash. In addition, the pilot can manually activate it via a remote-control switch in the panel. Once activated, the 406MHz distress signal is transmitted continuously, alerting international rescue services to the emergency and your location via the global Cospas-Sarsat Search and Rescue satellite system.

Dual Landing Lights are installed in the nose at different vertical angles to increase the lighted area. The Lights are LEDs, allowing a pulsing Taxi light during operations to increase visibility. A 3-position switch, located on the cyclic center post, allows the pilot to select between off, a pulsing mode, and having both lights on for landing.

Seat heaters are available on the forward seats and aft cabin’s outboard seats. Switches to control low and high heat setting are located at the bottom of the avionics console. The seat heaters operate only when the alternator switch is in the ON position to reduce the likelihood of inadvertently draining the battery before the engine is started.

Pop-out floats offer safety for over-water travel. Designed for emergencies, the floats inflate within 2-3 seconds of activation. When not in use, floats roll-up and stow in protective covers along the aircraft’s landing skids. The streamlined, low-profile design minimizes drag and allows for easy entry and exit of the cabin.
